Church of St. Nicholas

The construction of the church of St. Nicholas, the grand patron of seafarers, started in 1785. The marbles were carried by the habitants from Chios or other Aegean islands, but also from faraway places: Malta and Thessaly. The church is 28 meters long, 14 meters wide and 24 meters high. For the illumination of the church 67 windows and 8 doors were constructed. Nowadays there are 51 and 7 respectively. The church utensils or other high value offerings like the sacred vessels donated by Varvakis, were looted during the destruction of the island in 1824.

When Kanaris was born (1793), the construction of the temple was completed. It was destroyed in 1824 and renovated in 1863. It is worth climbing the 60 steps if you want to visit the church.
